The Law of Habit Forming

Written by Jerry on February 24, 2010 – 9:02 am -

 by Ralph Waldo Trine

Have we it within our power to determine at all times what types of habits shall take form in our lives? In other words, is habit-forming, character-building, a matter of mere chance, or have we it within our own control? We have, entirely and absolutely.

For there is a simple, natural, and thoroughly scientific method that all should know. A method whereby old, undesirable, earth-binding habits can be broken, and new, desirable, heaven-lifting habits can be acquired, — a method whereby life in part or in its totality can be changed, provided one is sufficiently in earnest to know, and, knowing it, to apply the law.

Thought is the force underlying all. And what do we mean by this? Simply this: Your every act — every conscious act — is preceded by a thought. Your dominating thoughts determine your dominating actions. The acts repeated crystallize themselves into the habit. The aggregate of your habits is your character. Whatever, then, you would have your acts, you must look well to the character of the thought you entertain. Whatever act you would not do, –habit you would not acquire you must look well to it that you do not entertain the type of thought that will give birth to this act, this habit . It is a simple psychological law that any type of thought, if entertained for a sufficient length of time, will, by and by, reach the motor tracks of the brain, and finally burst forth into action. Murder can be and many times is committed in this way, the same as all undesirable things are done. On the other hand, the greatest powers are grown, the most God-like characteristics are engendered, the most heroic acts are performed in the same way.

The thing clearly to understand is this: That the thought is always parent to the act. Now, we have it entirely in our own hands to determine exactly what thoughts we entertain. In the realm of our own minds we have absolute control, or we should have, and if at any time we have not, then there is a method by which we can gain control, and in the realm of the mind become thorough masters.

Here let us refer to that law of the mind which is the same as is the law in connection with the reflex nerve system of the body, the law which says that whenever one does a certain thing in a certain way it is easier to do the same thing in the same way the next time, and still easier the next, and the next, and the next, until in time it comes to pass that no effort is required, or no effort worth speaking of; but on the contrary, to do the opposite would require the effort. The mind carries with it the power that perpetuates its own type of thought, the same as the body carries with it through the reflex nerve system the power which perpetuates and makes continually easier its own particular acts. Thus a simple effort to control one’s thoughts, a simple setting about it, even if at first failure is the result, and even if for a time failure seems to be about the only result, will in time, sooner or later, bring him to the point of easy, full, and complete control.

Each one, then, can grow the power of determining, controlling his thought, the power of determining what types of thought he shall and what types he shall not entertain. For let us never part in mind with this fact, that every earnest effort along any line makes the end aimed at just a little easier for each succeeding effort, even if, as has been said, apparent failure is the result of the earlier efforts. This is a case where even failure is success, for the failure is not in the effort, and every earnest effort adds an increment of power that will eventually accomplish the end aimed at.

How Does Self Hypnosis Work? Part 2

Written by Jerry on November 2, 2009 – 1:03 am -

How Does Self Hypnosis Work?

Like any other skill, hypnotizing yourself or others takes practice.

Here are the basic steps:

   • Get into a comfortable position, which you will associate with being hypnotized
   • Induce a hypnotic state, one where your brain is very focused and concentrated on one thought or  idea.
   • While in the hypnotic state, make suggestions to yourself, using your script
   • Wake yourself up, with a slow counting cue. In this step, it may be helpful to add to your script – "I will wake up and I will feel energized to work on my goal."

In many cases, it can be easier to hypnotize yourself if you create a physical cue, something that lets your body know that you are ready to be hypnotized. It could be something as simple as snapping your fingers or touching your the tips of your thumb and index fingers together.

Once you are in this comfortable position in a quiet place, you can begin to induce your trance. For this, you might talk yourself into the hypnotic state or you might have an induction audio. (An induction audio can be made by you or bought from a professional hypnotist).

It may take steady, daily practice to be able to hypnotize yourself quickly. Most people can learn within three weeks. An important part of being hypnotized is being willing to be hypnotized – the entire time you are trying to hypnotize yourself, you will be aware that you are hypnotizing yourself, and if you are not willing to be hypnotized, you simply won’t be hypnotized. Relax and allow yourself to follow your own instructions.

How Can I Choose and Use An Effective Script In Self Hypnosis?

Your hypnotic script is the set of magic words you say to yourself during hypnosis. It can also be helpful to repeat them at intervals throughout the day, like a mantra.

To choose a good script, your suggestions should be:

   • short – around two sentences long, although for some people, it is only one word. It should be short enough to be easily remembered
   • positive – framing your goal in positive words which make you  feel good makes it easier for you to see your goal as already being a reality
   • past tense – not really the past tense, but your suggestions should imply that you’ve already accomplished your goal, and congratulate you for a job well done

Don’t worry if you don’t actually need to believe your script yet. The script is there to be said during the induction to convince you of what you are saying. If you already believed it, you wouldn’t need to keep repeating it to yourself.

Your suggestions can be stated during the induced hypnotic state, as well as just before you wake yourself. They should also be repeated at intervals throughout the day, to reinforce the idea in your subconscious mind.

While you don’t want to look like you’re babbling to yourself, the more often you remind your brain about what it is supposed to think, the more quickly your brain will begin to automatically think that way. And the more quickly your brain can think the way that you want it to, the more quickly you get what you want.

Self Hypnosis Compared To Hypnosis By Another Person

Hypnosis for personal development may be better if you can do it by yourself. Self Hypnosis can be more difficult and take longer than being hypnotized by a professional hypnotist. In some cases, however, it may be easier – you may be more willing to be relaxed and trusting of yourself than of another person.

Another advantage is that for a long term effect, it may be necessary to be hypnotized more than once or twice. It can be more convenient to learn to hypnotize yourself than to have to go to another person, not to mention paying for each session.

Hypnosis is more effective if it is done regularly. For therapeutic purposes, hypnosis with a professional may be better, but the results may not be enough to outweigh the cost of multiple sessions.

There is also the risk of choosing an incompetent hypnotherapist, or perhaps one who already has their own theories of what you need. Some hypnotherapists can be very focused on repressed memories, and while these can sometimes surface, if a therapist is looking for repressed memories, they will find them. Even if these memories didn’t actually happen.

For some people, a concern is that hypnosis will bring up repressed memories that they may not be ready to deal with. For these people, it may be better to go with a professional hypnotherapist, to have professional help with any problems which may arise.

You may also decide that it is less likely for you to bring up a repressed memory if you focus on your OWN goals during self-hypnosis, and then this won’t be a concern for you.

The natural advantage to self-hypnosis is that you can do it by yourself every day. This advantage may outweigh the advantage to going to a professional hypnotherapist, who may be better at hypnotizing you, and get faster results, but would not be able to provide the desired daily long term benefits.

If you, like many people, have little fear of serious issues popping up while using Self Hypnosis for things like quitting smoking or raising your test scores, it’s safe to give it a try.

The choice is all yours.

Understand Brainwaves in Less Than 20 Minutes

Written by Jerry on August 28, 2009 – 8:20 pm -

Different frequencies produce different effects on the human consciousness. Using this information, it has been discovered that the brain’s receiving and operating frequency can be altered by sound waves.

These videos explain brainwaves in an easy to understand way and might teach you a few things you didn’t already know.
