Shutting Out Outside Impressions

The fist requisite of concentering is the ability to shut out outside thoughts,
sounds and sights; to conquer inattention; to obtain perfect control over the body
and mind. The body must be brought under the direct control of the mind; the
mind under the direct control of the will. The Will is strong enough, but the Mind
needs strengthening by being brought under the direct influence of the Will. The
Mind, strengthened by the impulse of the Will, becomes a much more powerful
projector of thought vibrations, than otherwise, and the vibrations have much
greater force and effect.

In these exercises I will begin with training the body to readily obey the
commands of the Mind.

The first exercise, and one which must be mastered before the succeeding
exercises are undertaken, is the control of the muscular movements. This, at first
sight, may appear very simple, but a few experiments will convince you that you
have much to learn. The following exercises will be of great benefit to you in
acquiring perfect control of the muscles.

1. SIT STILL. This is no easy task. It will at first try your powers of concentering,
to refrain from involuntary muscular movements, but by a little practice you will
be able to sit still, without a movement of the muscles, for fifteen minutes or
more. The best plan is to place yourself in an easy chair, assuming a comfortable
position, then relax all over, and endeavor to remain perfectly quiescent for a
period of five minutes. Continue this exercise until you can accomplish it with
ease, and then increase the time to ten minutes. After you have mastered the ten
minutes exercise, increase the time to fifteen minutes, which is about as far as
you need pursue the exercises. You should not tire yourself with this, or any of
our other exercises. The better plan is to practice a little at a time, but as often as
possible. Bear in mind that you must not sit in a rigid position; there must be no
strain on the muscles; you must relax completely. This plan of relaxing will prove
valuable to you when you wish to get a good rest after fatiguing physical exertion.
It is an ideal "rest cure," and may be taken either sitting in a chair or lying down
on a couch or bed.

2. Sit erect in your chair, with your head up and your chin out, and shoulder
thrown back. Raise you right arm until it is level with your shoulder, pointing to
the right. Turn your head and fix your gaze on your hand, and hold the arm
perfectly steady for one minute. Repeat with the left arm. When you are able to
perform this feat, perfectly, increase the time to two minutes, then to three, and
so on until you are able to maintain the position for five minutes. The palm of the
hand should be turned downward, this being the easiest position. By keeping the
eyes fixed on the tips of the fingers; you will be able to see whether you are
holding your arm perfectly steady.

3. Fill a wine glass full of water, and taking the glass between the fingers, extend
the right arm directly in front of you. Fix the eyes upon the glass, and endeavor to
hold the arm so steady that no quiver will be noticeable. Commence with oneminute
exercises, and increase until the five-minute limit is reached. Alternate
right and left arms. Read more »

How to STOP Being a Person that NOTHING Seems to Work For

How to STOP Being a Person that NOTHING Seems to Work For -
by Bob Doyle

Do you ever wonder why great things happen to some people
but not to you?

Do you ever read about people who have tried this or that
product and had some incredible result, but when you try it,
you don’t get the same result?

Have you become a person who NOTHING seems to work for?

Maybe you’ve thought about trying the some new self-
improvement package that sounds great, , but you’re just so
tired of things not working for you.

Let’s take a look at how you’ve gotten where you are and why
these things might happen.

First, at some point, you tried something – either based on
a recommendation, a testimonial you read, or some other
reason. Basically, you tried it based on someone else’s
positive experience. However, when you tried it, you did not
get the same result so you made the assumption that it
didn’t work for you. But how true IS this? Often – VERY
often – things work differently for different people, and
it’s a mistake to judge your life by comparing it with
others. Perhaps you just needed more time. Maybe your
circumstances are completely different! Regardless, however,
you made up – you CREATED a Truth for yourself at that time,
that truth being "This didn’t work", although remember, that
truth is based only on your surface comparison with someone
else…and it really doesn’t have anything to do with you,
and what – in the cosmic scheme of things – is best for you.
Those results you read about for that other person are what
was right at that time for them, and that doesn’t
necessarily mean that NOW is the time for you and that it
will happen to you the same way that it happened for them!

From then on, every thing else you try is then compared to
that first experience, with the Truth in your mind being
"Well, it didn’t work that time…let’s see if THIS works".
So again you’re comparing…and not really trying anything
"purely" and on it’s own merit without preconceived notions
or judgements. You are already working against yourself! You
may not yet automatically expect failure, but you have it as
an option, and perhaps even a probability based on your
previous experiences.

The more things you try with this mindset, the more you
fortify this mindset – it becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy
that "Nothing works for me". Before you know it, that is who
you Become. The person you are about reaching your specific
goals or trying this or that product or technology is "It
works for others but never for me." Once you reach that
place, it will most certainly become true for you.

So what do you do? How do you break out of this pattern?
First, acknowledge how you got here…by comparing yourself
or your results with other people who are really on a
completely different path then you, although they may have
been after similar results. Then create a new idea for
yourself – give yourself permission to experience success on
your own terms, without judging what happens based on other
people or expectations set up by anyone other than yourself.

Once you believe that you deserve to succeed and that you
CAN succeed and that you WILL succeed, your life will
change. Whatever you try will work for you, because YOU
define what "working" is – not somebody else! You set your
own timetable, you are relaxed, and non-judgement. Your
infinite patience and lack of expectation based Externally,
will work with you in very powerful ways and you will regain
control over your destiny.

How to Zone Out in the Dental Chair

Written by Jerry on May 14, 2009 – 7:00 pm -

Guest Article

And so the therapy began.

My next appointment was the following week for more root canal and the week after that also.  Not only that my newly filled tooth was now even more painful than before so more work on my filling ensued (as well as more root canal).  To cut a long story short I then chose to have a crown in place of a filling that may, or not, have lasted very long.

By now I was helping myself to their filtered coffee and newspaper on arrival.

So today, as I again sat in the dental chair I was prepared.  I made sure I was sufficiently relaxed, centred and in the present moment before I turned up.

What did I do?  I meditated before my appointment and then meditated through my appointment!

As the shrill piercing sound of the drill reverberated through my head and my face sprayed with water, I simply drifted away to somewhere else – somewhere peaceful.  The dentist and the assistant continually asked me if I was okay – I’d slowly nod then zone out again, drifting away and closing the door to the sounds and movements of where my physical body was.

And then it was all over!

The next time you visit your dentist, it really pays to zone out during your procedure (if possible even before you get there) – especially if you’re nervous about any dental procedure at all like I am.

7 Steps to help you Zone out

1.   Get a meditation session in before you arrive for your appointment.  If you’re not sure how to meditate, do some slow, deep breathing exercises.  I generally take around 4 to 5 slow deep breaths, focusing on the outward breath.

2. Be in the present moment.  This is when you’re not thinking anything about the future – even 3 minutes into the future!  Nor are you thinking about the past – not even 3 minutes ago.  The present moment is now whilst you’re sitting in the dental chair, staring at the ceiling becoming aware of and concentrating on the rhythm of your breathing.

3. Once the procedure starts close your eyes and take your mind within.  Focus straight ahead – wherever you perceive straight ahead to be once you have your eyes closed – and think of nothing – just blank – the void – staring at the colours and patterns you can see as you sit in the chair with your eyes closed.

4. If you’re about to receive an injection – as the needle goes in, breathe into that area and continue to concentrate fully on your slow breathing until the injection is over.

5. Once that’s over, resume staring into the blank void that is the inside of your eyelids!

6. If you find it challenging to think nothing, focus on a visual image that makes you feel really, really good about yourself then have a look around and see where you are.

7. Whenever you sense you’re starting to again focus on the drilling or whatever else is happening in your mouth, breathe in slowly and deeply focusing on the rhythm of your breathing and allow every single muscle you become aware of, to deflate and relax.

Meditation is a great ‘self help’ tool and when applied during a visit to your dentist – it makes the experience if not enjoyable, at least bearable!

Credit Crunch Survival – The Top 5 Ways to Stay Positive During the Economic Crisis

Written by Jerry on February 10, 2009 – 12:53 am -

By Maria Westcott

Credit Crunch Survival Techniques….The global economic situation is affecting everyone in one way or another and at times like these, many people are worried about their finances, businesses or perhaps losing their job. You have to be careful not to get drawn into the collective negativity all around you. It is impossible to turn on the television, radio or open a newspaper without reading about the doom and gloom that currently prevails.

If the economic crisis is negatively impacting you, here are some steps you can take to put yourself back on the right path.

1. Credit Crunch Survival Technique #1. Make sure that you are not in any real danger. By that I mean that you or your family’s lives are at risk, there is no roof over your head or no food on your table. If there is a real threat, the first step is to address it and get out of harm’s way. Move in with family or friends, find food and shelter, etc. However, what you will see is that most of the things we worry about are not real threats to us at all, but just scenarios that we imagine in our head. What we think about, we bring about, so the last thing you should be doing is rehearsing all of the doomsday scenarios in your mind. Read more »
